By GEORGE KARRYS, Special to QMI Agency
It’s finally here. Curling’s greatest showcase, on the sporting world’s biggest stage, hosted by Canada, the No.-1 curling nation.
And here is everything you need to know about the next two weeks of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic curling competition that could be crammed into some 550 words:
YOUNG GUNS: The pre-Games gold goes to Great Britain women’s skip Eve Muirhead, known as the Next Big Thing. At just 19, she’s the youngest curler in the field, she’s won the past three world junior championships (including last year’s title on this very same Olympic curling ice) and she’s utterly fearless. Muirhead is tall, telegenic and bleeds Scottish blue: She’s also a champion in golf and — wait for it — the bagpipes. In a word, wow.
WILEY VETERANS: Keep an eye on Swiss men’s skip Markus Eggler. He throws second stones — like Canada’s Russ Howard did four years ago in Turin — and was elevated to skip position at last year’s worlds in Moncton, to take the heat off Swiss last rocker Ralph Stoeckli. The energetic, passionate Eggler won the world title as a skip back in 1992, has Olympic bronze from Salt Lake in 2002 and first battled Canadian skip Kevin Martin at their debut international event back in 1986 — the world juniors.
CHINA SYNDROME: Wang Bingyu’s women’s team started curling around 2001 — as full-time, fully funded professional athletes — and became world champions last March. The men’s squad finished fourth at their first worlds just two years ago. This is what can happen when a world superpower decides it wants to win gold in an Olympic sport. But the Olympics are different. Will this new kind of pressure crack the veneer of the unflappable, technical perfection of China?
OLD EUROPE: Two of Europe’s biggest markets happen to provide world curling’s saddest story. France and Germany boast decades of membership in the World Curling Federation and virtually zero growth in grass-roots development. If not for the obsessive nature of their handful of curling-crazed athletes, things would be even worse. Good performances from these veteran teams might help, but their winter sport bosses need to take a long-overdue look in the mirror.
BOOB TUBE: No, we’re not talking about the new women’s curling calendar, which is back with seven athletes who are competing in Vancouver. No less than six Canadian networks will be broadcasting the Roaring Game in multiple languages: CTV, TSN, Sportsnet, RDS, APTN and the OMNI channels. There are also hundreds of hours on three NBC networks. Things kick off with a bang on Tuesday at noon ET on Sportsnet, as Canada battles Norway in a potential men’s podium tilt. Nachos and dip, anyone?
GAME OF THE WEEK: Feb. 20, 10 p.m. ET on Rogers Sportsnet. Canada against Great Britain. Kevin Martin vs David Murdoch. Enough said.
PARTY PALACE: While it’s almost criminal there is no formal place for people to whoop it up before, between and after games, the athletes and fans will certainly create a celebration out of nothing. The historic Vancouver Curling Club is sure to be the place to party.

We ask skips and mates to help prevent rocks from hitting the hacks especially on glass end of the rink as they have been taking a beating as of late.
The format for the Dominion Bonspiel is a double knockout and starts Friday February 19th and continues Saturday. Come and watch some our best curlers trying to represent the club at the Dominion spiel. Game time is 7:00 pm.
There will be a Senior Fun spiel is Friday Feb 19, 2010 and cost is $10.00 per person with a registration sheet on the board,
Note that on February 19th all ice surfaces are in use at 7:00pm. On March 5 the junior bonspiel will have all 4 sheets in use.
Junior Bonspiel will be March 5 to 7th. We are having both provincial champions from NB, 2 teams from Nfld. 2 from N.S. and 1 from PEI. They are 4 teams entered in Canada games selection spiels. We will have some of the top junior talent here including Jade and Krista as NB Provincial champions.
Your next Friday Night Supper is this week, on February 19th. On Robina’s menu, is a great turkey meal, with coffee and desert.
On March 13-14, we are organizing a clinic for level one coaching. Clinic includes ice time, instruction in good delivery and techniques. We want to train coaches to work with schools to develop curling. Clinic will be done by Brian Rice. Cost of clinic is $125 per person. We are filing for a grant to cover expenses and see Linda Hanson for more information..
Stain glass art was donated by Sharon Demchuk to the club to raise funds. We are selling tickets at $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00 at the bar.

TORONTO - A sitcom based on the Paul Gross curling movie "Men With Brooms" has been picked up by CBC-TV.
The broadcaster says the ensemble comedy will be part of a slate of new series it plans to announce in the spring. The show is about a group of four guys who hang out in the same small-town curling club that was featured in the 2002 movie.
But the story takes place several years after the original tale and features all new characters and cast members.
Executive producer Paul Mather says Gross makes a guest appearance in the first episode as curling star Chris Cutter.
No air date has been set.
Mather, who wrote the pilot and serves as showrunner, says the cast consists mainly of young, unknown actors from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
"It's a really fast-paced thing and I think it's actually pretty modern and funny," says Mather, whose writing credits include CTV's "Corner Gas" and CBC's "Little Mosque on the Prairie."
"I'm quite happy with how it turned out, but it's definitely something that everybody can watch."
Mather is also the executive producer behind CTV's upcoming sitcom "Dan for Mayor," which debuts March 1. The 13-episode series is about a hapless bartender played by "Corner Gas" alum Fred Ewanuick and his run for mayor of a small Ontario town.
Mather says he may have to do some juggling if "Dan for Mayor" gets picked up for a second season while he's working on "Men With Brooms."
"Hopefully it won't conflict because it would be like choosing between your children," he says.

HOMER SIMPSON NEWS
VANCOUVER -- Homer Simpson is set to become the world's most famous curler in a special episode of the animated series -- an unlikely torchbearer for a sport craving respect at the Winter Olympics.
The beer-swilling, doughnut-guzzling cartoon character will pursue his Olympic dream in the episode of the popular, long-running series being aired days before the Feb. 12 opening ceremony of the Vancouver Games.
Curlers, once touchy about their sport being lampooned, say they are delighted, having learned to laugh at themselves, and will celebrate their place in the television spotlight with beer-and-doughnut parties across the United States.
"It brings attention to the sport," Rick Patzke, the chief operating officer for USA Curling, told Reuters. "I think it is a great thing.
"We tend to take things more good-naturedly now. In fact we're encouraging clubs to hold beer-and-doughnut parties.
"We don't take it personal. Really, Homer and Marge are the quintessential curlers. They are able to laugh at themselves, drink beer and eat doughnuts."
Curling, first played in medieval times on Scotland's frozen lochs, is an ancient game struggling to find its place in a modern sporting world.
Since becoming part of the Olympic programme at the 1998 Nagano Games, the sport has worked hard to shed its reputation as a game played at weekends by unfit men and women.
While top curlers compete with the same intensity as Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps, their good-natured approach to competition is another hallmark of a sport mocked for its image.
"I would say attitudes have changed since 1998," said Patzke. "Back then the attitude was: "Hey, they are making fun of our sport, don't even bother talking to the media".
"There's been a lot of education done on both sides and now both have embraced it."
Though it is still very much a niche sport, the world has become increasingly intrigued by curling.
It attracted significant audiences during the past two Winter Games, topping television ratings for all Winter Olympic sports, according to USA Curling, while cultivating a surprisingly hip following.
American country singer Toby Keith is a confirmed fan and Patzke says he has it on good authority that rockers Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi have on occasion rented ice time and picked up the brooms.
Plans have been developed for a curling-based reality show called "Rockstars""with the winner getting a chance to represent the United States at a future Olympics.
The U.S. curling teams even have their own 'Hurry Hard' condoms, a brand name inspired by the screams that can be heard at any curling rink as skips urge sweepers to clean the ice in front of the rock with shouts of: "Hurry, hurry, hard".
Canada has had a long love affair with the sport and, with nearly one million registered curlers, has more people playing the game than the rest of the world combined.
Among Canadians, curling enjoys mainstream status with events attracting sold-out crowds and top television ratings.
Record low temperatures of minus 46 degrees Celsius failed to deter 16,000 curling fans from nearly filling Rexall Place in Edmonton last month to watch Kevin Martin defeat Glenn Howard for the right to represent Canada at the Vancouver Games.
In Canada, the best curlers compete on a professional circuit, their sweaters covered with as many sponsors' logos as a Formula One car.
In Vancouver, only the Canadian men's and women's ice hockey teams will be under greater pressure than the curlers to win gold and tickets to the finals are hard to find.
"The CCA would have liked a larger venue, especially being in Canada," Canadian Curling Association CEO Greg Stremlaw told Reuters. "We certainly could have filled a larger building if it had been built.
"We try to leverage the Games, use it as a catapult to attract people to the sport. We just happen to have it as part of our culture here and we have been quite successful."
Names such as Eddie "The Wrench""Werenich and Schmirler "The Curler""are as familiar to Canadians as hockey players.
When Brad Gushue's rink took gold at the 2006 Turin Olympics the Newfoundland foursome returned home to a heroes' welcome and the new Team Gushue Highway.
Werenich was one of Canada's greatest curlers but in 1988 found himself at the centre of national controversy when he was told he was too fat and had to lose weight if he wanted to represent the country at the Calgary Olympics.
No other curler touched Canadians as much as Sandra Schmirler, who won the 1996 world championship while six months pregnant then two years later skipped Canada to a first Olympic gold medal in Nagano.
When Schmirler died of cancer in 2000, all Canada mourned. Flags in her native Saskatchewan were flown at half-mast and Prime Minister Jean Chretien expressed the country's loss.
JANUARY 20, 2010
After 14 draws, Team Daigle (with Rexton's own Jade & Krista) lost 8-4 to Saskatchewan's Paulsen. They currently sit at 3-6. Keep an eye on their progress at Season of Champions!
We had 2 teams attend the Teachers Bonspiel in Saint John this past weekend. Team skipped by Norman Richard finished as A winner and Louis Emile Daigle was A consolation winner.
Congratulations to Louis Emile Daigle who was selected to be a volunteer at the Ford World’s Championship in Contina D Ampezzo, Italy.
Friday Supper this week will be BBQ chicken. Bring a friend or family to enjoy a fine meal.

EMAIL PROBLEMS - In the last few weeks I have sent out weekly emails all to have them bounce back to me. There seems to be a problem with the server company that I have been using, which is also the website provider. I have lost all of my contacts, email wise. So if you could email me at this address, I can update my new email list - rextoncurlingclub@rocketmail.com
Added a few more pictures of the roof project last week, in the Club Pictures section. Check them out!
Our latest link has now been added to the site, featuring our bonspiels! You can get the latest information, find out who to call, where to sign up and all the bonspiel details online!

Roar of the Rings - Berthe Richard, Paulette Girvan, Mariette Demers and Camilla Vautour are in Edmonton AB taking in the action for the Olympic trials. They are sending daily E mail to keep us posted. Keep an eye on the spectators on TSN to see if you can spot them.
We were the fortunate recipient of grant (Heart Start) towards a purchase of an
Automatic External Defibrillator from The Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
The unit will stay in the Building for emergency use. Machine is easy to use 3
step process with voice commands. Over 1000 people die in NB of sudden cardiac arrest each year (5% survivor
outside hospital). A defibrillator combined with CPR increase the odds to over
30%. We need to do a part day training in CPR/AED in 2010.

Subject: The Ride for Mental Health
Hello Curling Fans, Our curling friend and a member of our senior ladies curling team, Carol Thompson is currently driving an RV following her husband Mel as he cycles from BC to Newfoundland this summer to raise money in support of mental health programs and services that help people living with mental illness. Mental illness is very personal to them as their daughter Lindsay suffers from it's effects. Lindsay is travelling with them and at times cycles along with Mel. A website has been established and Carol has been sharing many stories with everyone on the site's blog.
Please check it out at http://www.therideformentalhealth.org/
Not only is Mel cycling but he and Lindsay have spoken at numerous events along the way to raise awareness. A very difficult thing for Lindsay to do but so very brave! We are hoping to reach as many people as we can in the curling fraternity about this amazing journey they are on. Cheers!
